It is fascinating, and mysterious, how one’s life’s path is directed by select teachers, caring mentors and extraordinary opportunities that have the power to change the course of one’s destiny. They ‘happen’ to appear at just the moment where what they have to offer is exactly speaking to your sweet spot. You may not even be totally aware at the time of the impact but later it all makes perfect sense.

important mentors:

  • My Mother and her Mother - The ability to ‘see’ artistically and the skills to express it.

  • My Father and his Mother - The ability to lead with compassion and to move people to action.

  • My Art History Teacher in College- Dr. McCoy’s enthusiasm for the history of art inspired my interest in teaching and a new found understanding of how art brings not only beauty, but meaning and perspectives on world history expressed powerfully through the mediums of art.

  • My Art and Leadership students- some of the most powerful influences of my life have been my students. Their enthusiasm, their insights, their creativity, and their boldness taught me more than I could ever have taught them.

  • These are just a few of my most powerful mentors. There were many, many more to come. Each lending a hand, an idea, an opportunity, support, guidance, and all the while believing in me more than I believed in myself.

  • After retiring from speaking and teaching, I have returned to my true loves. Photography, painting, coaching and sharing the ‘Joy of Seeing’.

Each of these pursuits revolve around a word that has become the impetus of all that I desire to express and teach.

If you knew how to prevent suffering, would you stay quiet to avoid looking immodest?

That would be insane….

Yet that is precisely what you do when you hold back your insights, experiences, and unique way of seeing things.” alex mathers
